It’s a common misconception that thieves aren’t particularly smart. However, the real truth is that most thieves are organized and calculated. They stake out homes and businesses and record patterns. Due to this, they know when to strike, how and what to steal, and how to slip away undetected. This usually happens in a matter of minutes.
Research-Based Design
Medeco has spent more than 25 years studying the habits of thieves and how they compromise locks. One important discovery is that the likelihood of a thief getting caught exponentially increases with each minute it takes to gain access to a home or business. Lock design based on this research has made Medeco the premier US manufacturer of high security mechanical locks and electro-mechanical locks.
What Are Medeco Locks?
1967, the introduction of the Medeco high security cylinder revolutionized the concept of high security locks. In addition, the company pioneered the industry with its pin tumbler technology over 25 years ago. Medeco high security locks are extremely attack resistant, essentially pick-proof, and provide superior protection against key duplication.
Their product line also consists of a secure and sophisticated electronic access control system, also known as a keyless entry system. In addition, Medeco has the largest selection of retrofit cylinders on the market. This makes it simple to convert any existing lock to a pick-resistant, restricted key, high-security lock. Moreover, all of this comes with minimal replacement hardware.
Why Medeco Locks?
Medeco locks offer advanced features that make them the most secure and tamper-resistant mechanical locks on the market.
These features include:
- Innovative Design: Pin tumblers and a sidebar for manipulation resistance
- Superior Construction: High-quality, long-lasting machined brass components
- Hardened Steel Inserts: Resistance to drilling attempts
- Revolving Collar: Prevents the removal of the cylinder with a pipe wrench
- 1-Inch Steel Bolts: Prevent cutting
- Pick Resistance: Until a key raises each pin, plug is unable to rotate; Until pins rotate to the proper position of sidebar system, plug can’t rotate
- Won’t Open with Illegitimate Keys: Don’t operate with standard keys, skeleton keys or other types of keys used by thieves
- Extra Security Against Key Duplication: Require special key duplication equipment with a formula registered with the factory, which has control over key distribution
- Convenient Installation: Fit any standard lock and can be installed quickly
- Customizable: Can be keyed alike, differently, or master-keyed, depending on your needs
In addition, recent events have added to Medeco’s already enviable reputation:
- Medeco products earned the Certified Environmental Facts (CEF) multi-attribute certification.
- The Medeco T21 key management system won the 2015 Good Design Award for its one-of-a-kind way to manage multiple keys within a location.
What to Look for When Shopping for Medeco Locks
Although all Medeco high security mechanical locks have all of the above advanced features, not all Medeco locks are alike. For instance, the Medeco Maxum MD3 lock and the Medeco Bi-Level lock appear a lot alike. However, the cylinders are very different, with the Bi-Level lock not qualifying as a true high security lock.
The Bi-Level does offer key control and is superior to basic locks like those sold at hardware stores like Home Depot. However, it doesn’t officially carry the title of High Security like the M3. Still, some locksmiths have been known to present the Bi-Level lock as such. Therefore, it’s important to keep this in mind when shopping for Medeco locks. The best rule of thumb is to remember that you usually get what you pay for.
